Nagpur Poised for Major Infrastructure and Economic Growth

Nagpur is set to witness significant advancements in its infrastructure and economic landscape, with key developments in the MIHAN SEZ and upcoming budget allocations by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC). The city is also working towards establishing itself as a prominent IT and AI hub.

The Multi-modal International Passenger and Cargo Hub Airport at Nagpur (MIHAN) project is gaining momentum with the recent approval of GMR Group’s takeover of airport operations. This public-private partnership is expected to inject ₹7,000 crore into the airport’s development, including the construction of a new international-standard terminal and a second runway, aiming to solidify Nagpur’s position as a logistics capital. The MIHAN Special Economic Zone (SEZ) has also reported a substantial 40% surge in exports for the financial year 2025-26, reaching ₹9,626 crore, driven largely by manufacturing in the aviation and defense sectors. In a move towards rehabilitation, the Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC) has allotted developed plots to 116 project-affected families as part of the 12.5% developed land scheme.

Looking ahead, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) is preparing to present its budget for the financial year 2026-27, with an estimated outlay of approximately ₹6,500 crore. This budget is expected to heavily focus on infrastructure development, including road projects, water supply, sanitation, and healthcare services. The NMC transport committee has also approved the construction of 33 KV feeder bays at two major bus depots, costing ₹1.55 crore, and the permanent transfer of land for a modern bus depot with EV charging stations. These initiatives are geared towards enhancing public transport and accelerating the city’s transition to cleaner mobility options.

Furthermore, Nagpur is being positioned as a future IT and AI hub. Divisional Commissioner Vijayalakshmi Bidari has emphasized the need for enhanced infrastructure, connectivity, and skilled manpower to attract IT industries. To streamline investment, approvals for setting up units in MIHAN are to be granted within 45 days. The city is also focusing on urban greening and waste management initiatives, particularly in preparation for the upcoming monsoon season.
