Nagpur Metro Achieves Milestone with Solar Panel Installation at Hingna Depot

Nagpur, Maharashtra – In a significant step towards sustainable energy and efficient space utilization, the Nagpur Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (MahaMetro) has successfully installed a 50-kWp solar photovoltaic (PV) system at its Hingna depot. This pioneering initiative, the first of its kind for a metro rail in India, utilizes the space between rail tracks for renewable energy generation. The pilot project, implemented over a 200-meter stretch, is anticipated to produce approximately 70,000 units of green energy annually, potentially reducing carbon emissions by up to 65 tonnes each year. The system was developed through a public-private partnership, requiring no upfront investment from MahaMetro, and uses monocrystalline, half-cut solar PV panels. The generated power will be used for the metro’s own consumption, showcasing a commitment to eco-friendly operations.

The development of Nagpur as a potential IT hub is gaining momentum. Divisional Commissioner Vijayalakshmi Bidari has advocated for a concerted effort to establish the city as a major center for information technology, IT-enabled services, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and data analytics.
