**Nagpur Political Scene Heats Up Over CEC Demonstrations and Election Preparations**

Nagpur, Maharashtra – Political discourse in Nagpur is currently dominated by two key issues: ongoing demonstrations concerning the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, and preparations for the upcoming Nagpur Division Graduates’ Constituency election. The city has witnessed significant activity from various political factions and civil society groups in response to national political developments.

In recent days, lawyers and student organizations, including the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) and All India Students’ Federation (AISF), staged separate protests in Nagpur. These demonstrations were held in solidarity with those detained during recent protests in New Delhi, which were also centered around demands for CEC Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation. Advocates gathered around the Nagpur District and Sessions Court, while students protested at Samvidhan Square, voicing concerns about authoritarianism and the right to dissent. The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke has been a vocal participant in these protests, alleging potential links to the RSS in incidents during demonstrations in Jaipur, and asserting the group’s intent to continue their activism.

Meanwhile, the political landscape is also gearing up for the Nagpur Division Graduates’ Constituency election. With over 2.55 lakh graduate voters registered across six districts, 445 polling stations have been established. Nagpur district alone accounts for a significant portion of these voters and polling stations. The Congress has announced its decision to field sitting MLC Abhijit Wanjari again for this election. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) faced internal challenges as rebel leader Prof Anil Sole initially entered the fray as an Independent, with former MLC Girish Vyas supporting his candidature. However, following intervention from Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Sole has agreed to support the BJP’s official candidate, Sudhakar Kohale, and Vyas has withdrawn his resignation, averting a potential embarrassment for the party.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has been actively involved in these political developments. Speaking to reporters in Nagpur, Fadnavis criticized the Congress’s recent march to the Supreme Court, characterizing it as a “deep conspiracy to bring in ultra-Leftist mindset” and an attempt to undermine constitutional institutions. He also drew parallels to Indira Gandhi’s actions in 1975, suggesting a pattern of challenging democratic norms. The BJP’s Nagpur city unit chief, Dayashankar Tiwari, has also made strong statements, attacking Congress MP Rahul Gandhi and accusing him of spreading “anarchy.” The police in Nagpur have reportedly increased surveillance on CJP activists and opposition leaders in light of these ongoing protests and demonstrations.
