**NMC Proposes Underground Utility Corridors to Streamline Infrastructure**

Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) is set to implement a groundbreaking initiative to address the persistent issue of road digging by utility agencies. The corporation plans to construct dedicated underground utility corridors beneath footpaths along newly developed and reconstructed roads. This forward-thinking project, spearheaded by municipal commissioner Vipin Itankar, will initially cover approximately 38 kilometers of roads within the south-west Assembly constituency as part of a Rs 254.99 crore road restoration project. If successful, this model is slated for expansion to other constituencies across the city.

The proposed corridors will house essential services such as water pipelines, electricity cables, and optical fibre networks, with provisions for future natural gas pipelines. This strategic placement will allow utility agencies to access and manage services through designated chambers, thereby eliminating the need for disruptive road excavations for repairs or new connections. This move is expected to significantly reduce maintenance costs, minimize traffic disruptions, and prolong the lifespan of Nagpur’s roads, which have often been compromised by repeated digging shortly after resurfacing.

Furthermore, the project aligns with Commissioner Itankar’s vision of creating a comprehensive Geographic Information System (GIS)-based digital map of the city’s underground infrastructure. This digital mapping will enhance coordination among civic departments and utility providers, enabling more efficient identification and management of underground assets. The road designs will also incorporate parallel stormwater drains and rainwater harvesting systems, including recharge pits linked to borewells, to help replenish groundwater levels. This integrated approach aims to curb future road restoration expenses and improve overall urban infrastructure management.

The Nagpur Improvement Trust also has several urban infrastructure enhancement projects on the horizon, including the maintenance and management of facilities at Futala Lake on a public-private partnership model. Additionally, the Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport is set to undergo a significant multi-phase modernization and expansion, aimed at increasing passenger handling capacity and positioning Nagpur as a key aviation and logistics hub. These infrastructure developments underscore Nagpur’s commitment to evolving its urban landscape and enhancing connectivity.

नागपूर महानगरपालिका (NMC) पाणीपुरवठा, वीज वाहिन्या आणि ऑप्टिकल फायबर नेटवर्कसारख्या सुविधांसाठी रस्त्यांवरील वारंवार होणारी खोदकामे टाळण्यासाठी एक महत्त्वपूर्ण पाऊल उचलणार आहे. नवीन विकसित आणि पुनर्रचित रस्त्यांच्या फुटपाथखाली समर्पित भूमिगत युटिलिटी कॉरिडॉर (underground utility corridors) बांधण्याचा महापालिकेचा मानस आहे. आयुक्त विपिन इटणकर यांच्या नेतृत्वाखालील या महत्त्वाकांक्षी प्रकल्पाची सुरुवात सुमारे ३८ किलोमीटर रस्त्यांवर केली जाईल, जो २५४.९९ कोटी रुपयांच्या रस्ते पुनर्संचयन प्रकल्पाचा भाग आहे. या यशस्वी मॉडेलचा विस्तार शहराच्या इतर भागांमध्येही करण्यात येईल.

प्रस्तावित कॉरिडॉरमध्ये पाणीपुरवठा लाईन्स, विद्युत केबल्स, टेलिकॉम इन्फ्रास्ट्रक्चर आणि भविष्यात नैसर्गिक वायू (PNG) पाईपलाईनसाठी जागा असेल. यामुळे युटिलिटी एजन्सींना दुरुस्ती किंवा नवीन जोडण्यांसाठी रस्ता खोदाई करण्याची गरज भासणार नाही, तर ते निश्चित केलेल्या चेंबर्सद्वारे सेवांमध्ये प्रवेश करू शकतील. यामुळे रस्त्यांच्या देखभालीचा खर्च कमी होईल, वाहतूक कोंडी कमी होईल आणि नागपूरच्या रस्त्यांचे आयुष्य वाढेल.

हा प्रकल्प आयुक्तांच्या भूमिगत पायाभूत सुविधांचे GIS-आधारित डिजिटल मॅप तयार करण्याच्या दूरदृष्टीशी सुसंगत आहे. या डिजिटल मॅपिंगमुळे विविध विभागांमधील समन्वय सुधारेल आणि भूमिगत मालमत्तांचे व्यवस्थापन अधिक कार्यक्षम होईल. रस्त्यांच्या आराखड्यात समांतर पर्जन्य जलवाहिन्या (stormwater drains) आणि भूजल पुनर्भरण (groundwater recharge) करणाऱ्या विहिरींचाही समावेश असेल. या एकात्मिक दृष्टिकोनमुळे भविष्यातील रस्ते दुरुस्तीचा खर्च कमी होण्यास मदत होईल.

नागपूर सुधार प्रन्यास (Nagpur Improvement Trust) देखील सार्वजनिक-खाजगी भागीदारी मॉडेलवर (PPP) फुटाळा तलावाच्या सुविधांच्या देखभालीसारखे शहरी पायाभूत सुविधा सुधारण्याचे अनेक प्रकल्प हाती घेत आहे. याव्यतिरिक्त, डॉ. बाबासाहेब आंबेडकर आंतरराष्ट्रीय विमानतळाचे आधुनिकीकरण आणि विस्तार करण्याची योजना आहे, ज्यामुळे नागपूर एक प्रमुख विमान वाहतूक आणि लॉजिस्टिक्स केंद्र म्हणून उदयास येईल. या पायाभूत सुविधांमधील विकासाच्या कामांमधून नागपूरचे शहरी स्वरूप सुधारण्यास आणि कनेक्टिव्हिटी वाढविण्यास मदत होईल.
