**Nagpur Grapples with Intense Heatwave Amidst Power Outages**

Nagpur is currently enduring a severe heatwave, with temperatures soaring past 45 degrees Celsius, exacerbating the distress caused by frequent and prolonged power outages across the city. Residents are expressing significant frustration with the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) due to the recurring blackouts, which are severely impacting daily life and disrupting essential services. The power supply issues are particularly acute in West Nagpur, where prolonged outages have left communities without electricity for extended periods. MSEDCL has cited reasons such as overloading of the power distribution network due to high demand, damage to infrastructure from pre-monsoon thunderstorms, and necessary emergency shutdowns for maintenance and repairs. The utility is undertaking a substantial upgrade plan worth over Rs 1,385 crore, including Rs 602.98 crore funded by the Asian Development Bank, to modernize the network and meet the rising demand, which has surged from approximately 470 MW in February to nearly 950 MW during peak summer hours.

In response to the persistent problems, MSEDCL is also implementing extensive pre-monsoon maintenance, including replacing faulty equipment and trimming hazardous tree branches to minimize disruptions. Tenders have been floated for further projects valued at Rs 783 crore, which include the construction of new substations and laying extensive new power lines. Despite these efforts, residents are questioning the effectiveness of the upgrades in preventing summer-related power failures.

Meanwhile, Nagpur is also preparing for a series of academic conferences scheduled to take place in late May and early June 2026. Events such as the International Conference on Business Economics and Finance, International Conference on Emerging Trends in Electronics, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, and others are set to convene. The city is also seeing a push for improved logistics infrastructure with the recent inauguration of the Godam Logistics Park, aiming to bolster Nagpur’s position as a national logistics hub.

विशेषतः पश्चिम नागपूरमध्ये वीज पुरवठ्याच्या समस्या गंभीर आहेत, जिथे दीर्घकाळ वीज खंडित झाल्यामुळे रहिवाशांना गैरसोयीचा सामना करावा लागत आहे. MSEDCL ने वाढलेल्या मागणीमुळे वीज वितरण नेटवर्कवर अतिरिक्त भार येणे, प्री-मानसून वादळांमुळे पायाभूत सुविधांचे नुकसान होणे आणि देखभालीसाठी आवश्यक असलेले आपत्कालीन शटडाउन यांसारखी कारणे दिली आहेत. वाढत्या मागणीची पूर्तता करण्यासाठी आणि नेटवर्क आधुनिक बनवण्यासाठी MSEDCL एक मोठी सुधारणा योजना राबवत आहे, ज्याची किंमत १३८५ कोटी रुपयांपेक्षा जास्त आहे. यात आशियाई विकास बँकेकडून (ADB) मिळणाऱ्या ६०२.९८ कोटी रुपयांचाही समावेश आहे. फेब्रुवारीमध्ये सुमारे ४७० मेगावॅट असलेली विजेची मागणी उन्हाळ्यात शिखरावर असताना सुमारे ९५० मेगावॅटपर्यंत पोहोचली आहे.

दरम्यान, नागपूर शहर मे २०२६ च्या उत्तरार्धात आणि जून २०२६ च्या सुरुवातीला होणाऱ्या अनेक शैक्षणिक परिषदांसाठी देखील सज्ज होत आहे. बिझनेस इकोनॉमिक्स आणि फायनान्सवरील आंतरराष्ट्रीय परिषद, इलेक्ट्रॉनिक्स, इलेक्ट्रिकल आणि मेकॅनिकल इंजिनिअरिंगमधील उदयोन्मुख ट्रेंडवरील आंतरराष्ट्रीय परिषद यांसारख्या कार्यक्रमांचे आयोजन केले जाणार आहे. गोधम लॉजिस्टिक पार्कच्या नुकत्याच झालेल्या उद्घाटनामुळे नागपूरला राष्ट्रीय लॉजिस्टिक हब म्हणून स्थान मजबूत करण्याच्या उद्देशाने लॉजिस्टिक पायाभूत सुविधांमध्येही सुधारणा होत आहे.
