**Nagpur’s Water Reserves Dwindle, NMC Eyes Two-Year Conservation Plan**
Nagpur is facing a concerning drop in its water reserves, with current levels at reservoirs significantly lower than those of the previous year. The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has initiated an assessment of available water stocks to determine the city’s capacity to maintain its current water supply levels. Mayor Neeta Thakre convened a review meeting on Saturday to discuss a comprehensive strategy for a potentially prolonged period of water scarcity. The primary focus of the current discussions is water conservation, with no definitive decisions yet made regarding potential water cuts or adjustments to the existing supply schedule.
The meeting delved into the critical aspects of water availability, estimating the number of days the current stock can support the daily water quota, and outlining potential measures should the situation escalate. Mayor Thakre emphasized the urgency of conservation efforts, stating, “If water is not used carefully, the available stock will reduce quickly.” The civic administration is also intensifying its public appeal against the wastage of potable water, particularly discouraging its use for activities like vehicle washing where alternative sources could be utilized.
In parallel, the NMC is also grappling with infrastructure-related challenges. A recent report highlighted that out of 47 sanctioned projects under the Smart City Mission, seven remain incomplete. Six of these are primarily road infrastructure works, while one rehabilitation project for brick kiln workers is stalled due to land and approval issues. The Nagpur Improvement Trust is also seeking market rates for 32 acres of land for a smart city project, and the NMC plans to construct a Metro Mall within 30 months.
The city also saw Union Minister Nitin Gadkari advocating for a global code of conduct for the infrastructure sector during a conference in Nagpur. He emphasized the importance of infrastructure development for India’s economic growth and promoted the use of alternative materials in construction, noting that NHAI has utilized approximately 80 tonnes of municipal waste in road construction.
