Nagpur Civic Body Gears Up for Monsoon Preparedness with Drainage Cleaning Drive

The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has initiated a comprehensive pre-monsoon drainage cleaning campaign across the city. This proactive measure aims to prevent waterlogging and ensure smooth civic operations during the upcoming monsoon season. Teams from the NMC’s Public Health Engineering Department have been deployed to desilt and clear all major and minor drains, including those in heavily populated areas like Sitabuldi and Dharampeth. The drive is expected to cover over 1,500 kilometers of the city’s drainage network.

Mayor Mr. Sunil Agrawal reviewed the progress of the cleaning operations today, emphasizing the importance of timely completion to mitigate potential flooding. He also urged citizens to cooperate by refraining from dumping waste into drains, which often exacerbates the problem. The NMC has set up a dedicated control room to monitor the situation and address any immediate issues that may arise during the cleaning process and the monsoon.

In parallel, the Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT) is coordinating with the NMC to identify and clear silt from nullahs and water bodies that feed into the city’s drainage system. Special attention is being given to areas around the MIHAN project, ensuring that the developing infrastructure is not adversely affected by heavy rainfall. This inter-agency cooperation is crucial for a synchronized approach to monsoon management in Nagpur.

The NMC has also announced plans to increase the capacity of existing storm water drains in low-lying areas identified as prone to severe waterlogging. This infrastructural upgrade, coupled with the rigorous cleaning schedule, is part of the administration’s commitment to enhancing the city’s resilience against the challenges posed by the monsoon. Residents are advised to stay updated on weather advisories and report any drainage-related issues through the NMC’s official grievance redressal portal.
