**Nagpur Poised to Become a Central India IT and AI Powerhouse**

Nagpur is rapidly solidifying its position as a burgeoning hub for information technology, IT-enabled services, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and data analytics. Divisional Commissioner Vijayalakshmi Bidari has spearheaded a coordinated push to develop the city’s digital economy, emphasizing the need for enhanced infrastructure, improved connectivity, and a robust skilled workforce. This initiative, supported by the Maharashtra World Bank project, brings together industry leaders, academic institutions, and government officials to chart a roadmap for Nagpur’s technological transformation. The city aims to attract significant investment by building enabling ecosystems and leveraging its existing talent pool from numerous engineering and IT institutions in and around the MIHAN area.

The development strategy includes strengthening communication facilities and air connectivity to link Nagpur with major IT hubs like Hyderabad, Pune, and Chennai, addressing a critical gap that currently challenges investors and entrepreneurs. Furthermore, efforts are underway to develop Nagpur as a lifestyle city, enhancing urban amenities such as malls, theaters, hotels, and efficient transport systems to create a more attractive environment for professionals and businesses. To accelerate industrial investment, approvals for setting up units in MIHAN are being fast-tracked, with a directive to grant them within 45 days, significantly reducing current timelines.

The MIHAN (Multi-modal International Cargo Hub and Airport at Nagpur) Special Economic Zone is central to this growth, with ongoing expansions and a renewed focus on attracting diverse industries. Recent investments include four Nagpur-based companies injecting approximately Rs 1.5 billion into the SEZ for new facilities, which are expected to create around 400 jobs. These new units, focusing on areas like lithium-ion battery technology, hardware consultancy, research, and software development, reflect a spread of manufacturing and technology activities that complement existing industrial clusters within the SEZ. The zone already hosts major IT players like Infosys, TCS, HCL, and Tech Mahindra, alongside numerous mid-sized and smaller firms.

In parallel, Nagpur is also seeing the development of a Hi-Tech Media Park, envisioned to create over 20,000 jobs and drive infrastructure upgrades. This park, alongside advancements in MIHAN’s green energy and technology sectors, aims to foster job creation, skill development, and new construction opportunities. The government’s MahaSTRIDE project further aims to position Nagpur as a dedicated IT and IT-enabled services hub for central India, leveraging its strategic geographic location at the center of the country and its existing infrastructure, including Mihan India and an STPI footprint.
