Nagpur Poised to Become a Premier IT and AI Hub Under MahaSTRIDE Initiative

Nagpur, Maharashtra – April 30, 2026 – Nagpur is set to emerge as a significant Information Technology (IT) and IT-enabled services hub for Central India, bolstered by the state government’s MahaSTRIDE project. This strategic initiative aims to reposition the city as a key player in the national IT landscape, drawing investment and talent to the region. A high-level meeting chaired by Divisional Commissioner Vijayalakshmi Bidari on April 27 convened industry leaders, academic institutions, startups, and government agencies to chart a roadmap for this transformation. The goal is to create a synergistic environment where policy, industry demand, and academic supply align to foster growth.

The MahaSTRIDE project emphasizes developing Nagpur’s infrastructure and ecosystem to attract technology firms and support startups. Key focus areas include enhancing digital connectivity, ensuring reliable power supply, and developing IT parks. Divisional Commissioner Bidari highlighted the need for improved air connectivity with major IT hubs like Hyderabad, Pune, and Chennai, as well as better urban amenities, to create a more attractive “lifestyle city” for professionals. Efforts are also underway to streamline investment processes, with a directive to grant all necessary approvals for setting up units in MIHAN within 45 days.

In parallel, the ‘New Nagpur’ project, an ambitious urban development initiative by the Nagpur Metropolitan Region Development Authority (NMRDA), aims to transform the city into a globally competitive, high-tech hub. This project, spanning approximately 1,710 acres, will feature advanced infrastructure and smart utility systems to support start-ups, MSMEs, and international service providers. The initiative seeks to bolster Nagpur’s position as a key economic and industrial center in Central India, fostering innovation and commerce. The city’s existing educational institutions, including IIM Nagpur and VNIT, are expected to provide a strong talent pipeline for the burgeoning IT sector.

While Nagpur gears up for this technological leap, the city’s Smart City 2.0 initiative faces challenges. The state government’s decision to scrap the Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) has created uncertainty regarding execution frameworks. Furthermore, the existing surveillance network has been hampered by breakdowns, with a significant number of cameras non-operational due to optic fibre cable damage and hardware failures. Addressing these infrastructure gaps is crucial for realizing Nagpur’s full potential as a technological and economic powerhouse.
