**Nagpur Faces Water Scarcity Measures Amidst Below-Average Rainfall**
Nagpur is implementing strict measures to conserve water due to significantly low reservoir levels, caused by below-normal rainfall this year. The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has announced a series of actions aimed at preventing water wastage and ensuring adequate supply for the city. Reservoir levels are currently at only 58% of their capacity, prompting these decisive steps.
The NMC is intensifying inspections of high-consumption water users, including vehicle washing centers and swimming pools. Violators found wasting drinking water or contravening regulations will face fines of up to ₹5,000 per incident. The use of potable water for activities such as washing vehicles, cleaning roads, gardening, and construction is now prohibited. Additionally, the civic body is launching a drive against illegal water connections and plans to organize camps at zonal offices to help residents regularize them. Those found tampering with or removing water meters could face police complaints.
To address alternative water sources, the NMC will test and clean public wells, equipping them with solar-powered pumps. This water will be designated for non-drinking purposes. The corporation is also focusing on rainwater harvesting structures and reviving existing wells and borewells to improve groundwater availability. Furthermore, plans are in motion to establish decentralized sewage treatment plants (STPs) to reuse treated wastewater for gardening, watering roadside plantations, and construction activities, thereby reducing the demand on potable water supplies.
**Infrastructure Development Continues with Focus on Connectivity and Urban Renewal**
Nagpur’s infrastructure landscape is evolving with several key projects underway. The Public Works Department (PWD) is overseeing the concretization of a 2.6-kilometer stretch of Wardha Road between Rahate Colony Square and RBI Square, a project valued at ₹25 crore. Although facing delays and a requested 10-month extension, the work aims to improve a vital urban traffic corridor. The PWD is also undertaking a tender for the construction of septic tanks in Civil Lines, with an estimated contract value of ₹50.41 lakh, and has issued a tender for roof replacement and renovation at Ravibhavan, estimated at ₹0.75 crore. Additionally, a project for the repair and realignment of sewer lines in the Suyog Building area is being carried out, specifically for unemployed engineers.
The MIHAN (Multimodal International Hub Airport at Nagpur) project continues to be a significant driver of development, attracting investment in IT, logistics, and electronics sectors, with six new companies recently securing space within the SEZ. This burgeoning hub is positioned to transform Nagpur into a major tech and cargo capital, leveraging its central location in India. Looking ahead, the New Nagpur project, envisioned as a central business district with modern infrastructure akin to Mumbai’s BKC, is progressing with land acquisition underway. This ambitious development aims to create a new economic hub, further enhancing Nagpur’s connectivity and industrial growth.
