**Nagpur Halts Major Road Projects Amid Severe Water Crisis**

The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) is reportedly considering a significant pause on its ambitious ₹900 crore Phase 5 cement road project due to the escalating water scarcity gripping the district. This crucial infrastructure initiative, aimed at concretizing 265 roads across the city, requires substantial water for mixing, layering, and curing. With Nagpur experiencing its lowest rainfall in 18 years and reservoir levels standing at a precarious 58%, civic authorities are prioritizing drinking water conservation.

The decision to potentially defer these roadworks reflects the administration’s commitment to managing the city’s limited water resources. Executive Engineer of NMC’s Public Works Department, Leena Upadhyay, confirmed that deliberations are underway, emphasizing that ensuring drinking water availability is the foremost administrative priority. The project’s delay is considered necessary as deploying water tanker supplies for construction would directly contradict the conservation mandates, especially with proposals for hefty fines of up to ₹5,000 for misusing potable water.

Originally planned to cover approximately 89.22 km across nine municipal zones, Phase V saw an expansion to nearly 265 roads following recommendations from local representatives. Major allocations were earmarked for areas such as Ashi Nagar, Dharampeth, and Lakadganj. The project’s status underscores the challenging balance between urban development and environmental sustainability, particularly in the face of climate-induced water shortages.

Meanwhile, in another development concerning infrastructure, the 300-bed super-speciality hospital at Wathoda is nearing completion. The ₹187.7 crore project, executed by the Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT), is in its final stages, with workers applying finishing touches to the building. While the structural work up to the seventh floor is complete, the installation of medical facilities and equipment is the next phase. The hospital, designed as a ground-plus-nine-storey building, will house various specialized departments and aims to provide advanced healthcare closer to residents in Wathoda and surrounding areas.
